Furthering one's knowledge base and keeping up to date on current events in the marketing industry can not only empower a marketer, but also give them confidence and provide them with legitimacy when networking. This article will look at 3 distinct areas for information and detail how specific brands can assist a marketer.
Organizations & Magazines
Marketing is a massive industry and the market has responded by the rise of many organizations dedicated to industry excellence, and magazines with articles that explore the world of marketing. Magazines are now being completely digitized and organizations have moved their presence to the internet.
The American Marketing Association has great articles which can easily be digested as it contains a ‘key takeaways’ section which contains a ‘what’ section where they detail what the primary message of the article is, A ‘so what’ section where they explain what the message means, and, finally a ‘now what’ section where they detail the changes that will occur and/or action that is a result of the message. This enables a reader to quickly gain access to key information without the need to read a full article and allowing them the flexibility to get the essentials of many articles in a very short period of time.

Campaign Magazine has been around for 50 years and has continuously adapted during this time to remain successful. This adaptation has turned it from a physical brand to an online one with a massive amount of content available. Marketers can see articles from its early catalogs and compare how much marketing has changed or use these classic insights to gain a new perspective. The interesting aspect of the magazine is its inclusion of ‘Case Studies’ where a marketer can see what strategy worked (or didn’t work) in a specific industry.

Podcasts & Videos
Marketers have been on the cutting edge of information technology and were some of the first people to embrace the internet as a communication tool. This has given rise to a huge amount of not only text but also audio/video content related to marketing.
Podcasts like EMarketer’s Behind the Numbers allow for marketers to listen simply listen while otherwise occupied. When doing housework, travelling or a meal break, podcasts offer a simple way to learn new strategies.Behind the Numbers focuses on discussing current events in businesses with marketing experts in a candid discussion. This candid discussion leads to short (10-20 minute) easily digestible segments that still provides a listener an understanding of a topic without taking the top too seriously.

Youtube has given birth to many brands that have grown to mainstream media stardom and many others are investing in this medium of communication. The Entrepreneur Network encompasses all areas of businesses which allows a marketer to diversify and see the bigger picture yet still has a large amount of marketing related content. The network’s strength is its focus on personal responsibility and the ability of a marketer to create their own destiny.

Peer Reviewed Articles & Research Papers
For many, the mention of peer reviewed articles brings back the nightmares of endless nights sorting through them, desperately trying to extract the information they need as they skimmed through page after page. Yet they have the advantage of being written by experts in their field and standing up to the harshest scrutiny. Roughly a quarter( Plos One, 2014 ) of these articles can be accessed without any special rights or memberships.
