Imagery and visual appeal are key to attracting consumers attention and in a world filled with noise. Many marketers are great at telling a story, finding a perfect price point or promotion and, using segmentation strategies to find the perfect target market yet design and graphic creation is often something they struggle with. Yet images have a profound effect on a consumers psyche Fortunately for those who are interested in learning about image creation and editing there are free softwares like GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) which allows users to learn through experimentation. GIMP is not and will never be Photoshop (WebpageFX, 2013), it lacks the massive funding that Photoshop posses and the ability this creates for software improvement. For developing basic skills without sacrificing anything but time, GIMP is the better option.
Appealing graphics and animation, while often simple, can add appeal to the look of a product, promotion and campaign. Canva is a free software that can fill the needs of graphic design and includes many preset templates for a marketer to work with. The software allows marketers to edit these templates in a user friendly application and to create graphics that have a variety of uses. Its database is massive and has both personal and professional uses, which often overlap when a marketer is telling a story.
These softwares enable a marketer to become an expert in the area of visual appeal and with many jobs requiring graphic design skills, mastering these softwares gives a marketer an edge in the job market. Communicating this can be done by both describing the skills through text and designing a resume/cover letter utilizing them.
